Peru initiated measures to protect authorship rights of Peruvian investigators on Caral
The Ministers of Education (Ministry of Education of Peru) and Foreign Relations agree on the need to avoid any attempt to misappropriatie the work carried out by Ruth Shady’s team.
The Ministers of Education, Javier Sota Nadal, and of Foreign Relations, Manuel Rodriguez Cuadros, agreed on the need to carry out actions in the United States to prevent any attempt to appropriate the results of the work that since 1996 Peruvian archaeologists have carried out under the leadership of Ruth Shady, in the city of Caral, located al north of Lima.
Therefore, the Department of Foreign Relationss has given precise instructions to the Peruvian Embassy in Washington to express officially the worry of our Government about the supposed misappropriation of the Peruvian investigation on the part of two American investigators.
"The Government of Peru recognizes the authorship of the archaeologist Ruth Shady in the evaluation of the antiquity of the archaeological site of Caral", for which it is necessary to guarantee "the principle of safeguarding the authorship rights of the Peruvian investigators", maintained Minister Sota Nadal.
The Minister of Education considered that Peru should express its recognition of the interest that some American cultural institutions, among them the University of Northern Illinois and the Field Museum of Chicago, have shown relating to a significant historic discovery such as Caral.
"In this manner, overcoming any misunderstanding and having recognized the responsibility of Dr. Ruth Shady in this important discovery, it would be possible to encourage collaborative relations between the national team of the Caral Project and the cultural institutions of the United States interested in it", stated Sota Nadal.
The Sacred City of Caral, a civilization that reached its splendor 2,600 years B.C., is contemporary with the pyramids of Egypt and the cities of Mesopotamia. The scientific proofs indicate that in the rest of America urban development began 1, 550 years after it did so in Peru.
